Confessions of a Student

Well when i got ready to post today i wasn't sure what to talk about so i asked a floor mate. He stated that i should perhaps talk about the advent of goldfish, however i think i will talk about a spike in certain types of discussions i've seen here recently. Over this past weekend a Facebook page has opened up. It was a confessions page, this page allows students of my school to post "confessions" to a Facebook page anonymously. The ability to be anonymous makes people really open about their feelings, and this page has been a breeding ground for this very idea.
Before you start thinking i'm trying to dog on the Facebook page i'm not trying to do anything like that. In fact i like the page, i think its a great opportunity for students to post their issues. This page has brought to light many issues that i honestly did not know we had much of on campus. So as we continue please keep in mind that i don't have anything against the page or the creator of the page.
Many different issues seem to plague today's generation. This generation faces the struggles of homosexuality, bullying, abandonment, and much more every single day. Today's generation is a generation who doesn't know who they are or what purpose they have. Within each one of us lies a longing for meaning and purpose. Today's generation however has to face that same reality with the preconceived notion of everything being immediate. No one is willing to wait for opportunity to knock, instead everyone tries to know opportunity's door. Many different things have caused this attitude such as parents, high speed internet, and smart phones. Everything we need or just want to know is just a google search away. This generation has lost was it was like to actually work for something.
Along with the high speed quick service mentality there is the longing for relationship. Many youth have been abandoned by parents and friends. These lost relationships destroy all the relationships students have. i see this so much in both co-college students and in the high schoolers i work with. The confessions page just goes to show that people are looking to be accepted and looking for ways to become close to others all while trying not to get to close for the fear of yet another rejection.
To be honest when i look through the confessions page it makes me wonder if somebody has been listening to my thoughts. Some of the posts are the same things i struggle with and it pains me that it takes an anonymous website for someone to express their troubles. It shows that they really don't have anyone they can trust to share their stories with. i'm very glad that i have friends whom i know would be there for me and i couldn't imagine what it would be like looking at the world thinking that no matter what everyone is going to constantly judge you. Honestly that would suck, and to see that there are so many who feel this hurts me. Where are my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ? Where are my mothers and fathers in Christ?
The problem is that sometimes they're out of sight, and the "Christians" that do show up are often the ones that make it worse. Christians can be the ones that often criticize the most. And by nature of being a Christian we are hypocrites (we are sinners who profess a life shaped by Christ but still sin despite the fact - Romans 7:14-25). Despite Christ's messages of love and tolerance we often forget that we are to also live life with the sinners and the tax collectors (Matthew 9:10). "Christians" have seemed to be one of the most destructive forces here on my own campus. This is not good at all, especially based on the fact that this is a Christian campus.
In order for things to be made right we as Christians have to live in the way God called us to. Be perfect like your Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). That's what it comes down to. There is no easy "quick" way to do it. It takes time, it takes effort, and most importantly it takes God. We can't do this on our own. i encourage you if you have struggles please please talk to someone, don't let those feelings fester and grow because nothing good will come out of it. i also encourage my fellow followers of Christ to actually live like Christ. Sit down and take a read through the Gospels, read through Mark it doesn't take long. Look and taste that the Jesus is good! Be perfect like your Father is perfect.
